Sweet potato and Cabbage Burgers

(serves 4)


  • 2 sweet potatoes, halved, boiled and peeled

  • Half red cabbage

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • Pinch of salt

  • 3 small onions

  • 1.5 tsp turmeric

  • ½ tsp red chili powder

  • Olive oil for frying

  • ½ tsp ground black pepper

  • 1 tsp nutmeg

  • 1 tblsp butter

  • 2 tsp oregano



  1. Peel the potatoes, cut into cubes and boil for 10 minutes until soft,

  2. Mash the potatoes with the butter and herbs and spices,

  3. Finely chop the cabbage and onion or use a shredder and fry with olive oil until soft, about 8 minutes,

  4. Once cooked I blend in a blender if I want the mixture to be a little finer,

  5. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix well,

  6. Divide the mixture into equal sized balls and gently flatten them into round shapes,

  7. Heat a flat pan on medium with olive oil and shallow fry the balls till they turn golden brown,

  8. Serve hot with your favourite sauces and salad.
